Course Overview

※This workshop will be a streaming broadcast of “Let’s ART IN Countryside 2025 - 3rd Marcos Mateu Mestre,” held over three days starting Friday, June 13.

※The outdoor painting lecture will be available as an archived stream from the following day onward, as live streaming is difficult.

Course Overview:

Renowned artist Marcos Mateu-Mestre, known for his Framed series, has applied his storytelling-focused artistry in Hollywood film production. As a culmination of his experience, he authored the Framed Ink series, highly regarded worldwide. In film production, layout design is an indispensable element. This special course in Japan will offer a wealth of content prepared by Mateu-Mestre based on his books. Through lectures on storytelling techniques and hands-on assignments, participants will receive direct feedback from Mateu-Mestre. The three-day BootCamp-style course includes specially arranged hands-on classes and afternoon work sessions aligned with each lecture. Spending three days in a beautiful location with like-minded peers will undoubtedly become a memorable and valuable experience.

Course Content:
This course will thoroughly cover the fundamentals of visual narrative for visual expressions such as animation, film, storyboarding, and comics. It's an excellent opportunity to gain the understanding and confidence required in the industry. Workshop Structure
The workshop is divided into three key phases:
Lighting and Composition
Learn the techniques and theories essential for constructing compelling shots, including lighting, camera angles, lens usage, and composition strategies across various screen formats.

Perspective
Understand how to accurately depict spaces where characters and backgrounds coexist. This phase delves into the use of perspective to enhance spatial awareness, a crucial element in storytelling.

Environment Design
Explore the construction of narrative worlds. Examine how the backgrounds and surroundings of characters effectively establish the setting and atmosphere of a story, through both theoretical and practical approaches.

The workshop emphasizes not just the "how" but also the "why" behind each technique, fostering a deeper understanding and the ability to apply these concepts effectively.

Class Format
Sketching will be done in black and white; participants may use either iPads or traditional analog methods.
Morning sessions will be conducted live via Zoom.
Afternoons will be dedicated to fieldwork in Tomonoura, where participants will work on assignments based on the morning lectures and receive critiques from Marcos Mateu-Mestre.
For online participants, edited recordings of the afternoon sessions will be provided later.

Schedule
June 13 (Day 1)

Morning (9:00 AM – 12:00 PM): Lighting and Composition – Conveying stories through images.
Afternoon (1:30 PM – 5:30 PM): Fieldwork in Tomonoura focusing on morning lecture content, with demonstrations and participant assignments, followed by critiques from Marcos.

June 14 (Day 2)

Morning (9:00 AM – 12:00 PM): Understanding Perspective – Drawing on a stable foundation.
Afternoon (1:30 PM – 5:30 PM): Fieldwork in Tomonoura focusing on morning lecture content, with demonstrations and participant assignments, followed by critiques from Marcos.

June 15 (Day 3)

Morning (9:00 AM – 12:00 PM): Environment Design – Secrets of world-building.
Afternoon (1:30 PM – 5:30 PM): Fieldwork in Tomonoura focusing on morning lecture content, with demonstrations and participant assignments, followed by critiques from Marcos.

Instructor Introduction

Mr. Marcos Mateu Mestre

Marcos Mateu-Mestre, born in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, is a lead animation designer and graphic novel artist with over 30 years of experience in feature animation. His film credits include Balto, The Prince of Egypt, Asterix and the Vikings, Surf’s Up, How to Train Your Dragon 2, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. He has primarily worked with DreamWorks Animation, Netflix Animation, and Sony Pictures Animation, focusing on environment design, frame composition, lighting, and visual continuity. Notably, he served as the Production Designer for Netflix's epic animated feature Ultraman: Rising.

In addition to his film work, Mateu-Mestre is the author of several internationally acclaimed instructional books, including Framed Ink: Drawing and Composition for Visual Storytellers, Framed Perspective Vol.1, Framed Perspective Vol.2, Framed Drawing Techniques, and Framed Ink Vol.2. These books have been translated into multiple languages, expanding their global reach. He has also taught drawing, illustration, and visual storytelling techniques for over a decade. Currently, Mateu-Mestre resides in Los Angeles.

Visual Designer / Instructor
Ms. Yoriko Ito

Moved to the U.S. at age 21 and graduated from the Illustration Department of the Academy of Art University. In 1997, she joined DreamWorks Animation as a background painter. Later, as a visual development artist, she worked on films such as Madagascar and the Shrek series, becoming the first Japanese artist to be nominated for an individual Annie Award in Production Design. Her recent notable work includes serving as Art Director for The Super Mario Bros. Movie. She has contributed to productions at Sony Animation, Illumination Entertainment, and Netflix Animation, serving in roles such as Art Director and Production Designer. With over 30 years of experience in the U.S. animation industry, she is also dedicated to nurturing the next generation and is active as an instructor.
